The Personalized Medicine Program
For the majority of autoimmune diseases, there is currently no possibility for cure, prevention, or even long-lasting drug-free remission. Recent advances in technology have radically reshaped our understanding of immunity, creating an unprecedented opportunity to address the urgent need for improved management of these conditions.
The Personalized Medicine Program will address this need as it will enable the research team to define individual cellular and molecular profiles associated with disease risk, outcomes and drug responsiveness. By combining extensive patient databases and computational and analytic capabilities, the team will develop personalized treatment strategies leading to better health outcomes and quality of life for millions of Canadians.
Now is an ideal time for launching this ambitious program given our current leadership and collaborations with academic centres across Toronto and internationally. The globally recognized leaders spearheading this program are building on their pioneering contributions to autoimmune disease research, clinical trials and patient care. Housing one of the world’s largest patient databases in this field, this team has developed leading-edge expertise in clinical genomics and immunobiology that is critical to generating the advances in understanding of autoimmune disease needed for meaningful impact on health outcomes.

Few other institutions in Canada or globally have access to the medical expertise, large patient cohorts, and state-of-the-art equipment that will allow our team to drive a program of this dimension.
The Arthritis Research Foundation is raising funds to establish the Personalized Medicine Program and to thereby ensure that patients with autoimmune diseases receive the customized, optimized care that will enable best possible outcomes.
